In the words of the renowned former New York Times chief critic Harold Schonberg, pianist Sang Mi Chung has everything: "technique, temperament, and real personality". These qualities shine through in all of her performances and enable her to penetrate the mysteries of idiom to an exceptional degree. According to piano authority David Dubal, "Sang Mi Chung, 'A Great Pianist', does what so few accomplish: her Haydn is Haydn, Mendelssohn is Mendelssohn, and Chopin is Chopin. In short she has a rare understanding of idiom and this artist also communicates."
Born in Seoul, Korea, Ms. Chung has since the age of fourteen performed extensively in the United States, Europe, and Asia, as a soloist with orchestras, recitalist and chamber musician in such important venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Salzburg Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. Her performances have been aired all over the world including New York's WQXR, WWFM and Colorado Public Television. Cited by Musical America as one of the "Young Artist of 1990", Ms. Chung has recorded exclusively for Centaur Records since 1999, and has five CDs to her credit. She is a winner of the Gina Bachauer International Competition and has been awarded the William Petschek Scholarship several times, the Jerome L. Green Scholarship, and the Lado Inc. Scholarship at the Juilliard School, where she studied with Adele Marcus, David Dubal, and Martin Canin, earning Bachelor's and Master's degrees.
Ms. Chung is a founding member of the Arista Trio with whom she toured for many years with great success and critical acclaim. The Los Angeles Times raves: "THE ARISTA TRIO DAZZLES: one of the season's most auspicious debuts…a knock out performance of Beethoven…world class technique and ensemble with breathtaking clarity…a power of the piano trio scene."
The trio was named Chamber Music America's "Artists to Watch." According to the Philadelphia Enquirer, "If there is any justice in the world of music, Arista's name will someday be as well known as that of the Beaux Arts Trio…plenty passionate but also intelligently controlled."
In addition to her solo performances, Ms. Chung is an avid chamber musician performing with leading musicians in the New York area.
Ms. Chung is a Steinway Artist.
