In 1910, like countless other immigrants, a young Polish student, Stefan Mierzwa stood at Ellis Island—just $9 short of the fee needed to begin a new life in America. A friend lent him the money. That small act of kindness changed everything.
Mierzwa went on to found the Kosciuszko Foundation, and with it, opened the door of opportunity for generations to come. Since its founding in 1925, the Foundation has supported thousands of individuals through education—changing lives, empowering talent, and strengthening communities across the United States and Poland.
