A Place of Healing: KF Supports Rehabilitation Camp for Ukrainian Families

This year, for the third consecutive time, the Kosciuszko Foundation proudly supported a Rehabilitation Camp for Ukrainian Families in Poland, offering therapeutic care and hope. The program provides care for mothers and children whose husbands and fathers have been killed, gone missing, or remain imprisoned as a result of the ongoing war.

Rehabilitation Camp for Ukrainian Families – Healing and Hope in Poland

Co-organized by the Humanitarian Folkowisko Foundation and SOS Wioski Dziecięce, the Rehabilitation Camp for Ukrainian Families provided much more than rest and therapy sessions. It became a safe and healing space where children and their mothers could begin to rediscover peace, hope, and a sense of security after months—or even years—of trauma and uncertainty.

In the quiet surroundings of the Polish countryside—where the sound of sirens was replaced by birdsong and the rustle of trees—families from Dnipro and other war-affected regions of Ukraine took their first real breaths of relief. For many of the participants, it was the first time in a long while that silence no longer meant danger, but tranquility.

While the mothers worked through grief and complex emotions with psychologists, their children experienced adventures and healing moments of joy. Each day brought new activities designed for emotional recovery:

  • A visit to the Zamość Zoo, where the children explored the animal kingdom and the wonders of nature.
  • A ropes course that challenged fears, encouraged teamwork, and built confidence through laughter and shared achievement.
  • An unforgettable visit to an observatory, where looking at the stars became a metaphor for new possibilities and dreams.
  • A visit to the historic train station in Basznia Dolna, which transformed into a lesson about history, technology, and the adventure of travel itself.

Creative workshops, group activities, and innovative “team-up” sessions co-led by facilitators from Folkowisko and SOS Wioski Dzieciece encouraged the children to express themselves, build friendships, and experience joy that, for many, had long been absent.

At the heart of the camp, however, was something even deeper: a sense of safety and belonging. The forest cabin, far from the front lines, became a refuge where these families could slow down, share their stories, and begin healing together. Because sometimes, healing begins with a single moment of peace. As one volunteer reflected, it was not just the children and mothers who changed—the experience transformed everyone involved.

The Kosciuszko Foundation is honored to support the Rehabilitation Camp for Ukrainian Families, which directly embodies the values of solidarity, compassion, and resilience. This project is part of our broader initiative to support Ukrainians affected by the war. Since the beginning of the invasion, the Kosciuszko Foundation has raised over $1.8 million and engaged in various humanitarian, educational, and cultural preservation programs to aid Ukraine.

“This initiative holds special meaning for us, as it directly helps those most vulnerable—children and their mothers who have lost everything. Providing a safe space where they can find moments of peace and begin the healing process reflects our commitment to the values of compassion, solidarity, and humanity,” said KF President Marek Skulimowski.
