Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. Hilary Koprowski: Historical Marker Unveiling in Philadelphia

The KF Philadelphia Chapter successfully led the initiative to install a historical marker honoring Dr. Hilary Koprowski—a Polish-born renowned scientist, inventor of the oral polio vaccine, and a long-time visionary director of the Wistar Institute. This project received support from many distinguished scientists, including Nobel Prize laureates, and culminated in an unveiling ceremony attended by over a hundred people.
The event drew notable government representatives who offered their remarks, including Pennsylvania State Senator Timothy P. Kearney, Commissioner of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Prof. Allison Dorsey, Ph.D., Chief Deputy Mayor of Philadelphia Aren Pratt, Councilmember Jamie R. Gauthier, and Honorary Consul of Poland Deborah Majka.
Following the unveiling of the marker, the Wistar Institute hosted a reception that reunited Dr. Koprowski’s former colleagues and friends. The event featured a stunning piano recital by Dr. Kasia Marzec-Salwinski, performed on the very piano that Dr. Koprowski used to play.
The marker dedicated to Dr. Hilary Koprowski is located in Philadelphia, on the corner of 36th Street Walkway and Spruce Street, next to the Wistar Institute.
A big thank you and congratulations to Andre Zlotnicki, Chairman of the KF National Advisory Council and KF Philadelphia Chapter President, for navigating the initiative through the entire process and making it happen! We also extend our gratitude to the volunteers and everyone who supported and contributed to this project.
