All visa formalities should be taken care of well in advance. You also need to take into account the visa procedure at the embassy in Warsaw. Participate in the life of the university where you work. Submit proposals for presentations of your results at seminars and conferences. Don't have complexes. Polish science has its achievements, which are respected and recognized by researchers in the US.

Communicate with the people you want to work with on-site, especially the supervisor. Supervisors of large groups tend to be extremely busy or not even available at all for considerable periods, so you may have little chance to benefit from their expertise and learn new methods, common practices, etc.

Start looking for an apartment early is the most crucial thing - the prices may increase once the time is approaching. Similar thing with the flights, but they are not as expensive as the accommodation. Try to ask the host institution for as much help as they can provide. Start looking for an invitation from an American institution as early as possible. The same applies to looking for an accommodation once the candidate is accepted.

My advice would be to learn as much as possible about the planned field-site before coming to the US and, if possible, make many connections prior to the research. Stay realistic in terms of writing proposal and what can be actually achieved during a short stay and acknowledge that some of the research activities can be continued/completed while in Poland. Be/stay open-minded about a change of plans and difficulties.

Start your documents in advance! In terms of accommodation, book a hotel for a week and look for apartments while being in your city, it's way easier than try contact a leasing office from Poland. Enjoy yourself while you are there and make sure to go sightseeing, it's worth it!

When I was planning my trip, all resources provided by KF were really helpful. As a result, I felt well prepared when I was leaving Poland to begin my life in the US. Also, I felt that if I needed any support while there, I could contact KF to receive all the information I'd need. I felt well taken care of.

Your tips for Future Scholars:
If university housing is available, I would advise to choose it for your stay; you won’t have to worry about utility bills as everything is included in the rent and it usually comes furnished. Also, after a certain period of time in the US, you will not be allowed to use your Polish or international driver's license and you would require a state-issued one.
