Courses at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin are designed for students over 18 years of age who are wish to acquire versatility in their communication skills and develop a thorough understanding of the Polish language and culture. The program is geared to anyone who requires fluency in Polish for professional or academic purposes. The program is flexible enough to appear to persons who have limited time for travel as well as to those who need as much time as possible to engage in learning the language.
Language courses are available from 2 to 8 weeks beginning in early July. An additional series of courses ranging from 2 to 5 weeks begins in late July. Students will be placed in an appropriate proficiency level based on a placement test which will be given at the university at the start of the program. Beginner, intermediate and advanced levels are available. Class size is limited to approximately 10 students affording each student personalized attention.
Applicants choose the intensity of the language course when completing the on-line application form. Intensity refers to the number of hours per day spent learning the Polish language. The following course intensity levels are available: PL, PLI, and PLH.
PL are non-intensive courses which meet daily from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. from Monday through Friday and total 5 hours per day, 25* hours per week (4 hrs + 1 lecture). PL courses are for students who want to develop the linguistic skills necessary for communication in everyday situations. All PL courses provide students with a solid base for further study of the Polish language.
PLI are intensive courses which meet from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. from Monday thru Friday. In addition, student attend classes focused on oral practice and extended development of vocabulary and pronunciation from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily except Wednesdays. A total of 33* hours per week (6 hrs + 1 lecture) at this intensity level. This program is designed for students who want to make rapid linguistic progress.
PLH are highly intensive courses which add an additional layer of learning above and beyond the PLI course. Students begin each day with language instruction from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and attend classes focused on oral practice from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. daily except Wednesdays. In addition, students also have one-to-one practice with a teacher from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. or 4:00 to 6:45 p.m. daily except Wednesday. These extra sessions are devoted to role-playing activities, and any other language practice as determined by the student. Students enrolled in a PLH receive a total of 37* hours per week.

All courses offer lectures, seminars, workshops, cultural and social activities as well as sightseeing trips. Students will have an unique opportunity to meet with celebrities of Polish cultural and political life and see masterpieces of Polish art and architecture.
The following chart includes the arrival and return dates for each program and the program fees for each intensity level. The price structure at the Catholic University of Lublin is designed so that the longer the course, the lower the price per hour of instruction.

The registration fee and program fee and is due when you submit the on-line application form. Program fees include: tuition, course materials, cultural events and sightseeing of Lublin and Sandomierz. Airfare, optional trips and accommodation are NOT included in program fees. Program fees do not include: airfare, local transportation, spending money. All sessions include sightseeing tours of Lublin’s Old Town and Sandomierz . Sightseeing of Warsaw is included in programs lasting 3 weeks or longer. Lublin – July 6 and July 27 Sandomierz – July 7 and July 328 Warsaw*** – July 20 and August 10*** Please note that the guided portion of the sightseeing tour of Warsaw ends at 2:00 p.m. Thereafter, students will have free-time to explore the city on their own before boarding the bus for the return to Lublin. Students in the July and August 3-week programs may head to the airport for their return flights to the US. However, with advanced planning, 3-week session participants may choose to pre-book a hotel for an overnight stay in Warsaw and return to the States on the following day. |
HOUSING
Students live in double occupancy rooms at a student dormitory. Fee for accommodation in double occupancy rooms is $9 per day. Bathrooms are shared. Single rooms are available at the dormitory for an additional fee of $9 per day.
MEALS
Meals are prepared in the in the traditional Polish way. Special dietary needs are taken into consideration and should be listed on the application form. Fee for 3 meals a day at the university cafeteria –$21.
CULTURAL EVENTS
Students will have the opportunity to take part in workshops including Polish traditional dances with the Song and Dance Ensemble KUL, workshops organized by the University library, country of origin theme nights and more. A visit to the University Museum, opportunities to attend plays, Polish movie nights, and concerts will also be available. In addition, the city of Lublin offers a variety of cultural events throughout the summer including the Jagiellonian Street Fair which includes Polish foods, presentations of Polish culture and traditions, and the Magicians Carnival which includes performers, acrobats, jugglers, mimes and artists.
LECTURES AND SEMINARS
Each day includes a one-hour lecture, which is delivered in both English and Polish. Lecture topics include the early and contemporary history of Poland, geography, politics, literature and art, Polish traditions, religion, music and contemporary issues.
Students in all language intensity and proficiency levels are invited to participate in other forms of learning including Polish scrabble games, Polish sing-a-longs, short skits and plays, pronunciation competitions, and the like.
JPII CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPTS OF CREDIT
To apply for a JPII Catholic University Transcript of Credit you must speak to your university academic adviser prior to the start of the program in Lublin. Print a copy of this page, a KF Credit Approval Form (see application forms), the 2020 JPII KUL syllabus and speak to your academic adviser. Inform your advisor of the intensity level that you expect to enroll in and the duration of the program in which you intend to participate. Your academic advisor will review the number of hours of instruction, course content, and determine whether the course can be used towards your degree requirements and/or electives. If your university approves a transfer of credit, please return the completed Credit Approval Form to the Kosciuszko Foundation Summer Study Abroad Office.
Students who apply for credit must attend classes and pass final exams. Please note that in the Polish academic system 1 academic hour = 45 minutes.
FLIGHTS TO POLAND
Participants are responsible for flight arrangements.
OPPORTUNITY FOR FREE BUS TRANSFER FROM WARSAW
The JPII Catholic University of Lublin can provide bus service from Chopin/Okiecie Airport to the dormitory in Lublin if a number of students request this service. JPII KUL student representatives will meet arriving students at Chopin/Okiecie Airport and guide arriving students to the bus. If a minimum of 10 students request this service, the bus will be at Okiecie Airport from 11:30 a.m. to approximately 3:00 or 3:30 p.m.
If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity please complete the KUL University Bus Reservation Form and e-mail it to the Summer Study Abroad Office as soon as your flight arrangements are set.
The final decision regarding bus service will be made once the final date to submit supporting documents has elapsed, May 20nd Students will be informed of bus availability on or about June 5th.
Kindly note that with the exception of the three week program in July and the three week program in August, return bus service from Lublin to Warsaw is not provided at the close of programs. Upon request, summer program administrators at the Catholic University of Lublin will provide information on bus and train service from Lublin to Warsaw. Please inquire in Poland.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma by the first day of the program. All applicants who meet eligibility requirements are accepted to attend the program.
